Raw Ceremonial Cacao

Raw ceremonial cacao is cacao in its pure, unprocessed form, traditionally used in sacred rituals by ancient Mesoamerican cultures such as the Mayans and Aztecs. Unlike regular cacao powder, which is often roasted and processed, ceremonial cacao is made by lightly toasting or sun-drying the cacao beans and stone-grinding them into a thick paste. This process preserves its natural fats and nutrients, such as magnesium, theobromine, and antioxidants, as well as its energetic properties. The paste contains the cacao bean's natural fat (cacao butter), which balances the stimulating effects and helps with the gradual release of its compounds.

Cacao contains several key active ingredients, with theobromine being the most prominent. It acts as a mild, heart-opening stimulant that increases energy and mental clarity without the jitteriness associated with caffeine. Other important compounds include magnesium, which relaxes muscles and calms the nervous system, and antioxidants like flavonoids, which support cardiovascular health and improve mood. Cacao also contains anandamide (known as the "bliss molecule") and phenylethylamine (PEA), both of which contribute to feelings of happiness, love, and well-being. A typical ceremonial dose ranges between 20-42 grams (1.5 to 2 ounces) of cacao, which can produce effects such as emotional openness, increased focus, and enhanced introspection, especially in meditative or ceremonial settings.

Taking cacao in combination with a psychedelic like Magic Mushrooms

It can be a complete game changer to consume ceremonial cacao when one is taking a journey with a psychedelic substance like magic mushrooms. The mazatec shamans knew this, which is why they have always served their mushroom sacrement along side cacao beans during their ritual. The Mazatecs view cacao as a gentle, nurturing force that harmonizes with the more intense, visionary effects of the mushrooms, helping participants navigate their inner exploration more smoothly.

The subjective effects of consuming 20-30grams of cacao

Heart-Opening

Theobromine, a key active compound in cacao, functions as a vasodilator, promoting increased blood flow and a sense of warmth throughout the body. This physiological response contributes to what is often described as a "heart-opening" effect, enhancing feelings of empathy, love, and emotional connection.

Energy Boost

Theobromine provides a smooth, sustained energy lift without the jitteriness of caffeine. It promotes mental clarity, focus, and alertness, making it ideal for creative activities or meditation, while also supporting an overall feeling of calm and centeredness.

Mood Enhancement

Cacao contains several compounds that influence mood, including anandamide and phenylethylamine (PEA). Anandamide interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the brain, producing feelings of bliss and euphoria, while PEA acts as a natural antidepressant, promoting feelings of pleasure and excitement. These compounds, combined with flavonoids that exhibit antioxidant properties, contribute to an overall enhancement of mood and well-being, mitigating stress and anxiety levels.
